Have your say: Best gear of 2020

For the past few weeks, our readers have been voting on their favorite photographic gear released in the past year in a wide range of categories. Now that the first round of voting is over, it’s time to reveal the winners.

Remember though, it isn’t over just yet! It’s time now to pick an overall winner. Don’t miss your chance to cast your ballot – this one’s for all the sweeties.

Best prime lens – Runner-up: Nikon Z 50mm F1.2 S

We only recently received a copy of the new Nikon Z 50mm F1.2 S, but so far we’re extremely impressed. Offering excellent sharpness at all apertures, Nikon’s new 50 might be on the large and heavy side, but that’s a price that we’re willing to pay for optical excellence. Clearly you agree, because the Nikon Z 50mm F1.2 S took the runner-up spot in your vote for the best prime lens of 2020

Best prime lens – Winner: Sony FE 20mm F1.8G

Clear winner of this year’s readers choice award for best prime lens is the Sony FE 20mm F1.8G. We love this lens for its almost aberration-free rendering and excellent sharpness, all in a package which remains reasonably compact and lightweight. Without a doubt, the Sony FE 20mm F1.8 G is among the best prime lenses of its type on the market, and it was a convincing winner in this year’s readers choice poll.

Best zoom lens – Runner-up: Canon RF 70-200mm F4L IS USM

Taking the runner-up spot in this year’s poll for best zoom lens is the Canon RF 70-200mm F4L IS USM. Canon clearly made a lot of you very happy when it announced the RF 70-200mm F4L IS USM as a lower-cost and even more portable alternative to its flagship RF 70-200mm F2.8. Sadly, Canon has recently announced that shipping will be delayed for a little while, but we’re just as eager as you are to try it out!

Best zoom lens – Winner: Sony FE 12-24mm F2.8 GM

Another excellent ‘GM’ lens from Sony, the FE 12-24mm F2.8 GM takes the concept of the traditional wide zoom one step further, reaching 12mm at its wide end while remaining a pretty portable lens. We love this zoom for its sharpness and versatility, and clearly you do, too. The Sony FE 12-24mm F2.8 GM was the clear winner in this year’s readers choice award poll for best zoom lens of 2020.

Best camera – Runner-up: Fujifilm X-T4

The Fujifilm X-T4 was one of our favorite cameras of the year, for its combination of image quality, handling and features, including in-body image stabilization. The X-T4 has almost everything an enthusiast stills shooter or videographer might need, and clearly it’s proven to be a hit with DPReview readers, too.

Best camera – Winner: Canon EOS R5

This one wasn’t even close. The Canon EOS R5 is one of the most powerful cameras on the market, and the clear winner in this year’s readers choice awards poll for best camera. Offering an excellent feature set for stills photographers and videographers alike, the R5 represents a new phase in Canon’s evolution, and the first in (we hope) a series of powerful mirrorless cameras from one of the oldest names in the business. Apparently you’re as excited as we are, because you voted the EOS R5 the best camera of the year.
